Steelbacks keen to get back to playing

Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely expects to name a largely unchanged team when they take on Worcestershire tomorrow.

The Steelbacks will be desperate to get back into action after a wasted journey saw them go to Holland and back during the week without getting any cricket played.

The last time they played in the Yorkshire Bank 40 was over two weeks ago since when Stephen Peters has broken his finger.

But his absence is likely to be the only alteration to a team desperately looking to kick-start their one-day campaign.

“We’re leaving selection pretty last minute this year but I don’t see many changes,” Wakely explained.

“We have said we want to use the rotation policy so that we have every bowler fit for every game.

“We are waiting on the bowlers to make a decision but I think it will be much the same side for this game.”

Wakely admitted that after the Dutch debacle and all practise being rained off this week it might have been useful for a few of the team to have played in the university game against Loughborough.

But, in the end, it was felt taking care of the bodies was more important.

He explained: “It was so frustrating in Holland.

“It was raining when we got off the plane, raining when we got back on it and hadn’t stopped at any time in between.

“We were planning on doing some practise but couldn’t so it was probably the case that a lot of people could have done with some cricket at Loughborough.

“But we have to make sure everyone is fit.

“Even just travelling takes quite a bit out of you so it was good to have a couple of days to get that out of our systems.

“Now we want to get back to playing cricket and really need to pick up some wins.”
