A march backed by the English Defence League is planned to go through Northampton town centre on Saturday.
Organisers plan to meet in Abington Street, close to the Eastgate pub at 11.45am and march to All Saints Church, where they will hold a minute silence for Drummer Lee Rigby, who was stabbed to death in Woolwich last week.
Officers from Northamptonshire Police have confirmed they have been made aware of the event and have said they will be present to ‘provide reassurance’.
Chief Inspector Max Williams said: “We have received a request from a member of the public requesting permission to organise an act of remembrance for soldier Lee Rigby, who was killed in south east London last week.
“We have considered the request and, following discussion with the organisers, there will be a short procession in Abington Street starting at 11.45am on Saturday, followed by a minute’s silence and flowers laid at the cenotaph.
“Due to anticipated numbers, there may be some slight disruption in Abington Street, the taxi rank and the memorial garden area of All Saints’ Church.
“A number of similar acts of remembrance have been organised across the country and town centre officers will be on patrol to provide reassurance and ensure the event goes ahead smoothly and without incident.”
