Northampton Borough Council has revealed early plans to use allotment land to extend a cemetery.
The proposals, which were submitted to the planning department at the borough council for review, involve a development to Duston Cemetery in Berrywood Road, Duston.
The cemetery, which opened in 1936, has no available burial plots remaining and has increasing demand.
The land proposed for the extension is part of a larger area of allotment land and is adjacent to the existing cemetery, with access off Westfield Road and Berrywood Road.
The patch of land proposed for the development, which covers 1.38 acres, has not been used as allotment land for at least 10 years.
The land is also owned by Northampton Borough Council and was obtained for that purpose.
However, no existing allotment plot holders would be affected or made to move if the proposed cemetery extension went ahead.
For many years Northampton Borough Council has recognised that the allotment land should provide the cemetery extension and no plots have been have been built on the land for atleast 10 years.
Over the last three years more allotment land has been brought back into use in Harlestone Road and there are plans for new plots at St Crispins.
The Environment Agency said the report did not present any issues.
