Work to improve Northampton’s main shopping street will be completed this week.

In March, Northampton Borough Council started work on a £60,000 scheme to replace worn out litter bins and benches and plant a number of new trees in Abington Street.

The final new benches and bins will be installed this week, completing the street’s spring clean.

The leader of the authority, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm) said: “These past few years have been a tough time for every high street and improving our town will help make the environment a more attractive place for visitors to relax and shop.

“The changes aren’t drastic, but simple improvements can help make a big difference to the environment so the town will look its best.”

The improvement work has also seen disused bollards removed and steel grilles around the bottom of trees replaced with new breathable and porous material that will not trap litter.
