The officer in charge of policing the British Grand Prix at Silverstone is calling on visitors to help keep the weekend a low-crime event.

Event commander, Superintendent Sean Bell, said the weekend in south Northamptonshire has seen low numbers of incidents in recent years, and he was keen for that to continue.

Up to 300,000 people are expected to attend the weekend at Silverstone, many of them staying in campsites in the vicinity of the circuit.

Supt Bell said: “In respect of crime and public order issues, reports and incidents have been at low levels in recent years. But where there are large crowds of people, always be aware of your surroundings at all times and ensure that you do not mislay or draw attention to valuable items on your person, in your vehicle or, if you are camping, within your tent or other living accommodation.

“We have had great successes in fighting crime in recent years and want you to have a safe event and not to become a victim of crime.”

Regarding the road closures in place over the weekend, Supt Bell said: “The event remains the largest weekend sporting event to be staged in this country. It has a considerable impact on the road network as well as businesses and communities in the Silverstone area.

“Improvements to the road network have reduced delays to a minimum, however, motorists should still allow additional time for journeys to and from both Silverstone and to the neighbouring area over the Grand Prix weekend.

“Last year’s event was hit by bad weather and hopefully the sun will be shining throughout the Grand Prix weekend this year.

“However, if you are delayed, please be patient and do not abandon your vehicles on verges, roundabouts and other areas that disrupts the one-way systems in place. Your vehicle will be towed away.”

The police station for the event is located near the main entrance to the circuit, and will be open from 6.30am to 6.30pm, to deal with crime reporting and recording, public inquiries and lost property.

Extra officers will be carrying out foot patrols in Silverstone and the surrounding villages.
