Residents of Collingtree in Northampton have expressed strong concerns about plans to build about 1,000 new houses in the area.

Developers Bovis Homes this week held a display of their plans at the Guildhall.

At the same time, members of the Hunsbury and Collingtree Residents Alliance held their own display in the building, expressing fears about the scheme.

Campaign group member, Rod Sellers said: “Everybody in Collingtree is very concerned about this.

“Flooding is the big issue, but the amount of traffic this development would cause is also a real worry.

“Anyone who drives through the Collingtree area now will know the traffic levels are already on a knife-edge.”

Bovis plan to submit a planning application for the development to Northampton Borough Council next month.

As well as up to 1,000 houses, the development, which would be between Collingtree Park Golf Club and the M1, would also include a new primary school, shops and a community centre.

A spokesman for Bovis told the Chron the development would include a drainage system to prevent floods and measures to tackle traffic problems.

He added: “We recognise residents will have concerns about a development of this size but we must also recognise that Northampton has a significant under-supply of housing land at present, which is preventing hundreds of local people, especially young families, setting up home close to their families and jobs.

“The development will provide these much-needed homes, a range of facilities and open spaces for the entire community and will also bring a significant economic boost to the area, creating hundreds of jobs on the construction side and through the supply chain.”
