A suspected drink driver has appeared in court charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving following a crash that killed two drivers in Northamptonshire on Saturday night.

William Wilson, aged 33, from Westrum Park, Westrum Lane, Brigg, Humberside, is accused of driving the wrong way along the A14 dual carriageway, near Naseby, at about 11pm on Saturday night, without his headlights on, while “under the influence of alcohol”.

He appeared before Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of driving after consuming excess alcohol.

Two people died as a result of the crash, between junctions 1 and 2 of the A14.

They have been named as 26-year-old Stephen Lewis Donnelly and 21-year-old Mandy Toni Gold, both from South Yorkshire.

The victims have not yet been named by Northamptonshire Police.

Police say a “light coloured” Mercedes, which was being driven by Wilson, crashed into a green Ford Ka and a red Peugeot 208.

Mr Donnelly was driving the green Ford Ka, while Ms Gold was a passenger in the car.

No one else was injured.

Appearing in court today, Wilson made an application for bail, which was rejected by District Judge Tim Daber, and the case was referred to Northampton Crown Court.

Wilson, who was accompanied by his parents in court, was dressed in a dark blue t-shirt and trousers and spoke only to confirm his name.

No pleas were entered.

The Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

They would also like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed a light coloured Mercedes saloon car being driven, prior to the incident, on the A43 near Corby or Kettering, or travelling in either direction on the A14 between junctions 1 and 7.

Witnesses, or anyone with information about this incident can call the Drivewatch hotline on 0800 174615.
