Designs showing what a £43 million new county council headquarters which is due to be built in Northampton town centre could look like have gone on show.
Six alternative designs for the new building were put on display to the public this morning.
They show what an office block designed to house 2,000 county council workers could look like when it is built on a council car park in Angel Street, at the back of the current County Hall building.
The leader of Northamptonshire County Council, Councillor Jim Harker (Con, Ise) said the six modern designs suggested the new building would become an icon for Northampton.
He said: “I think we’re very pleased with the way all the different architects have responded to the design challenge.
“Obviously these are still sketches and there will still be a lot more detailed work to do, but I hope this will create a landmark new building for Northampton.
“This is an important site and this will be a large new building for the town centre, so inevitably it will be a landmark.”
The new building will replace 12 existing county council buildings spread across Northampton.
The authority has claimed the development will save up to £54 million in the future running costs of the 12 existing buildings.
They have also estimated that the 2,000 people who would be brought back into Northampton town centre because of the development would bring an extra £12 million into the town centre’s economy each year.
It is hoped the new building, which is code named Project Angel, will be built by autumn 2016.
Plans showing the six proposals are on public display at Northampton Central Library in Abington Street until Friday. Comments about the plans can also be submitted at www.northamptonshire.gov.uk.
