Northampton is to receive a further £3.5 million in Government funding to help bring Enterprise Zone projects forward.

The second round of awards from the Local Infrastructure Fund, totalling £50 million across the country, was announced on Thursday afternoon.

Northampton’s share will improve electricity substation infrastructure that currently feeds part of the zone and also help with making land at Nunn Mills suitable for building.

Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm), leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “This is great news and demonstrates the Government’s confidence that we can deliver.

“It is the third announcement about Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone in just the past week, leaving no doubt about the amount of progress being made.

“With plans for a new hotel at Albion Place under consultation, six designs for Northamptonshire County Council’s Project Angel scheme to bring its staff back into the town centre, and Nationwide Building Society expressing its commitment to Northampton, this is a particularly exciting time for our town.”

The Government has also announced it would make £100 million in grants available for Enterprise Zones in the next financial year.

Councillor Mackintosh said: “We look forward to bidding for a share of that money which could help us further our aims even more.”
