Gone are the days when a fancy dress party meant cutting a couple of holes in a bed sheet and claiming you were a ghost. The demand for more outlandish outfits and crazy costumes has meant business is booming for town centre costume hire shop Narnia.
The Gold Street store, which opened almost 12 months ago, is an Aladdin’s Cave of costumes, stocking everything from Batman and Robin costumes to cheerleader skirts and donkey masks.
Owner Sandra Carr, who has a rich background producing, choreographing and providing costumes for cruise ships and theatres worldwide, said: “A lot of people don’t know we are here all year round, they think we’re just here for Halloween but we have a huge selection of stock suitable for events all year round.
“We cater for all the usual stag and hen party outfits, birthday fancy dress parties and fundraisers but we also do a lot of things for school activities such as World Book Day or particular history projects such as the Victorians, Edwardians or Romans.”
The best-selling outfit is the Joker costume from the Batman films while the cast of many shows at Derngate, including the annual panto, are regular customers to pick up accessories to complement their wardrobe.
Prices start from £17 for the hire of a superhero outfit to £21 for more intricate dresses. Full-scale mascot outfits, perfect for charity events, are available to hire for £25.
