Police say they are “cautiously optimistic” drivers are finally getting the message that they shouldn’t get behind the wheel after having an alcoholic drink.

Northamptonshire Police today confirmed 103 people were arrested in June after being caught during a month-long summer drink drive campaign.

Senior police say they saw a reduction of 29 per cent compared to last year, despite breathalysing around 3,000 drivers, nearly 1,000 more than in 2012.

Head of force operations, Superintendent Andy Cox, said: “Even though we breathalysed more people, the number over the limit was considerably less. I am cautiously hopeful that motorists are finally starting to think before they get behind the wheel after having a drink.

“Our aim is not only to stop anybody who thinks it’s okay to drive while over the limit, but also to educate all motorists about the dangers of drink and drug driving.”

Across June, 2,767 people were breathalysed, 103 people were arrested and 72 people were charged.

Seven of the arrests were made between 7am and noon, during the so-called “the morning after”, while of the 103 arrested, 26 were drivers aged between 17 and 24.

The campaign was timed to capture the seasonal increase in drink driving associated with sunny beer gardens, barbecues and lighter evenings.

Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds added: “One of my top priorities is reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“I am pleased to see the results of this campaign - it appears the message is getting through; if you’ve had a drink, don’t drive.”

Anyone who suspects someone of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is urged to call the Drivewatch Hotline, a 24-hour telephone service, on 0800 174615.

This confidential service is regularly monitored and followed up by officers.
