Every day this month the Chron will be teaming up with the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to feature a ‘Business of the Day’ – giving you more information about an independent firm in the town.
Today, we highlight St Giles Cheese in St Giles Street.
It is almost three years since St Giles cheese first opened its doors in Northampton town centre, amid a bleak economic outlook and palpable muttering of ‘it won’t work, not in Northampton’.
But thanks to a winning formula of hard work, a passion for their product and high quality goods, manager Steve Ward has seen the business flourish, becoming something of a mecca for town centre foodies desperate to get their hands on some top class cheese.
Mr Ward said: It’s been going well and it does restore your faith slightly that people have grown to like us. There was a lot of negativity early on but there’s a lot of people out there who want to buy and eat better quality food.
“we have lots of people coming in asking for a good quality Cheddar because they just can’t find anything suitable in the supermarket, it’s mass-produced, is homogenised and full of tasteless milk. We can give them an alternative and once they’ve tasted it, there’s no going back.”
While their selection of more than 100 cheeses is impressive, there’s plenty more to St Giles Cheese than the name suggests. A recently launched charcuterie counter selling locally produced pastrami, corned beef and haslet is proving extremely popular, while everything from pies, chocolates, chutneys and bread are also on sale.
Mr Ward added: “We are a small family business and we love what we do. We enjoy getting to know our regulars and they become more than just customers. That’s something the supermarkets will never be able to beat us on.”
