Uni to honour Heseltine at ceremonies

Former deputy prime minister, Lord Heseltine, is to be honoured by The University of Northampton at a graduation ceremony next week.

The 80-year-old Conservative politician, who lives in Thenford, near Brackley, is one of six well-known people with links to Northamptonshire who are set to receive an honorary degree or title.

More than 3,000 students will be graduating from the university during ceremonies held every day from Monday to Friday at Royal & Derngate.

Lord Heseltine will be presented with an Honorary Fellowship during a ceremony next Thursday morning, while War Horse author, Michael Morpurgo, who has written a book on legendary Northampton Town footballer, Walter Tull, will receive an Honorary Doctorate during a ceremony later the same day.

Other people to receive awards include chairman of Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership, Paul Southworth, and influential educationalist, Ed Baines, who will both receive an Honorary Fellowship. Global planning director, Allan Fraser-Rush, will receive an Honorary Doctorate.

Dr Marie Dickie, chairman of the Friends of Northampton Castle group will also be given an Honorary Fellowship.

There will be a total of 11 graduation ceremonies and students will graduate for the first time in subjects including BA Music Practice and Production, BA Sports Marketing, Joint Honours Web Design, BSc Psychology and Counselling, BSc Sport and Exercise Psychology, MA Transpersonal Counselling and Psychotherapy and BSc Physical Activity and Health

Meanwhile, data released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency has shown 95.7 per cent of graduates last year have secured employment or are in further study since leaving the university.
