A grant-giving charity has handed out almost £100,000 to a number of Northampton’s good causes.

The Northamptonshire Community Foundation awarded £94,400 in grants to 24 local groups last month.

The grants panels which awarded the money took part during the foundation’s Philanthropy Week, which promotes giving locally.

Grants director at the foundation, Rachel McGrath, said: “This month we have funded an array of groups across Northamptonshire doing exciting and much needed activities, including youth clubs and activities for older people, local heritage, improving green spaces, sports and dance, activity enhancing village life and supporting young parents and children.”

One of the groups to benefit from the grants was the Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance, which is raising funds to re-open the former Baby Cafe in Wellington Street, Northampton.

The cafe closed earlier this year due to funding cuts but provided support and advice to mums about breastfeeding.

The foundation awarded the alliance £3,000 to help them towards their aim of funding the cafe for two hours every Friday for a year.

The alliance needs £10,000 in total to do this and co-chair of the group, Briony Askew, said: “We are delighted with the grant but it’s the first step for us rather than the final step. We want the cafe open because it is such a loved and respected service for mums and gives them extra support.”
