A heatwave warning has been issued by the Met Office with temperatures in Northampton expected to climb up to 30C during the weekend.

Weather conditions between noon on Friday and 8pm on Saturday are expected to be extremely hot and people are being urged to take care if they are staying out in the sun for a prolonged period.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service experienced an increase in emergency calls as a result of the hot weather last weekend and operations support manager Steve Pratten is urging people to stay hydrated and wear suncream.

He said: “We received over 2,600 emergency and urgent calls last Saturday. A 15 per cent increase in calls compared to the previous

Saturday.

“Many of those calls were from people who were feeling unwell as a result of the hot weather or because they had not taken necessary precaution to protect themselves or their loved ones.

“Temperatures are set to increase again this weekend and so we’re asking people to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing while they enjoy the weather and make sure they are aware of the local health service they can access for advice and treatment.”

Tips to help people enjoy this weekend include drinking plenty of water, particularly if drinking alcohol.

Wear a sun hat and sunscreen to prevent burning or heat stroke and supervise children and babies in paddling/swimming pools.

If you begin to feel unwell in the heat, take a sit down and rest inside and take a drink of water. If you still feel unwell after a time, you can get advice from your GP out of hours service, 111 or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or local pharmacy.

Despite the prediction for hot weather, Pitsford Hall weather forecaster Mike Lewis has also predicted some “sharp showers” on Saturday afternoon.
