A speed survey conducted by concerned villagers found more than 60 per cent of cars were breaking the limit near a school.

Duston Parish Council carried out the survey in and around Main Road last week.

The road is used by about 15,000 people a day, many of whom will drive past Eldean Primary School.

The highest speed recorded was in excess of 50mph. The limit is 30mph.

Duston Parish Council chairman, Alan Earle, said: “We’ve been working in conjunction with county council highways to look at traffic in Main Road and Berrywood Road. We’ve done one survey in Berrywood Road between Ryeland Way and Main Road, and one from Main Road to Eastfield Way. We have got some serious issues with speeding, with in excess of 60 per cent of cars exceeding the limit. It is a major road for people going to the school.”

Sergeant Nick Paul, from Northampton South-West Safer Community Team, said: “We have taken on board the results of the survey and are working with the Highways department and the safer roads team. Highways will be looking at finding a solution to speeding problems on these roads, and we will be carrying out speed checks in the Duston area and prosecuting those who break the speed limit.”
