Every day this month the Chron will be teaming up with the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to feature a ‘Business of the Day’ – giving you more information about an independent firm in the town.
Today, we highlight Made In Northamptonshire in St Giles Street.
At a time when provenance is a buzzword among savvy shoppers wanting to know the origins of their purchases, it seems appropriate that a shop selling goods made only in Northamptonshire is going from strength to strength.
Nina Nathwani, one of the team of volunteers who help run Made in Northamptonshire in St Giles Street, said the future of the pop-up shop, originally intended to last for just nine months, is still up in the air but hopes are high the lease can be extended.
She said: “It’s been brilliant and who knows what the future holds? It’s been fantastic for the artists as it’s given them a platform to showcase their work in a High Street store which is something many of them would never have had the chance to do previously.
“We stock products from dozens of local designers, from students to internationally-stocked artists, and there has been a real appetite from the public for what we are doing.
“People are keen to buy local, they like to be able to customise the products and meet the artists. They are no longer just buying the product, they want to buy the story behind it.”
Made in Northamptonshire was set up through funding from the University of Northampton, the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District and Creative Northants.
The shop sells everything from paintings by local artists to mugs, cushions, ornaments, pottery and textiles.
