The Goddard sisters from Rugby & Northampton AC won a county double at the NAA 3,000m Championships when the race was held within the Corby AC open meeting at Rockingham Triangle.

The combined ladies race included a field of 20 athletes and 14-year-old Kirsty Goddard finished in fourth place overall with a time of 10 mins 51.0 secs to win the U17 women’s Northants title.

Her older sibling Bethan clinched the U20 competition with 11:00.2 in eighth position.

One place ahead of her in exactly 11 mins was club-mate Emer Wintsch and the 13-year-old took gold in the under-15 girls race with all three athletes achieving a personal best time.

Sarah Bennett won the silver medal in the under-20 event on 11:28.6, while Sian Williams took bronze in 14:51.8 for the under-17 women.

There was a superb front-running display from the senior ladies champion when Rebecca Hall of Corby won the race by almost 25 seconds with 10:17.5.

The men’s race saw an exciting finish in the open competition by two Leicester athletes. Fourteen-year-old Ben Dijkstra just held off veteran Gordon Lee to record 8 mins 53.0 secs and the English Schools 1500m champion went to the top of the under-15 boys 2013 UK rankings.

In third place Rory Grant won the senior men’s NAA title with the Birchfield Harrier recording 8:59.6 and R&N’s Chris Lamb just missed out on a medal with 9:17.5.

Also representing the club in the veteran men over-40 race was Steve Heighway who finished in fifth spot with 10:31.8.
