Every day this month the Chron is teaming up with the Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to feature a ‘Business of the Day’ – giving you more information about an independent firm in the town.
Today, we highlight St Giles Music in St Giles Terrace.
There are some stores in every town which are simply retail institutions. In Northampton, St Giles Music is undoubtedly one of them.
This mecca for music lovers celebrates its 25 musical development of thousands of Northamptonshire students in that time, including some of its own staff!
Manager Phil Job said: “We’ve got nine teaching rooms here and some of the staff were taught here themselves as children. It’s great to see them improving, really picking it up then going away to study and eventually come back to teach here. We’re one big family really.
“We cater for all sorts of musicians but our main customers are the parents of schoolchildren learning to play instruments. They can come here for their first instrument and pick up the basics, we sell everything they need.
“There used to be more independent stores in Northampton and I really think people appreciate the customer service they get from us rather than one of the big national chains. We know our customers and we become friends over time. We get a lot of repeat business and we really appreciate that.”
The change in musical trends influences sales at St Giles Music, with a recent resurgence in the sales of acoustic guitars at the expense of electric models, reflecting the lack of guitar bands in the charts.
Mr Job added: “It comes and goes in waves. We just have to make sure we are there to stock whatever it is that’s in vogue at the time.”
