A shop which has been based in Northampton for the past 83 years opened for the last time today.
Outdoor goods retailer, White & Bishop, have decided to close their Bridge Street store so they can concentrate on their growing on-line business.
The company’s managing director, Steve Moseley, said it had been very emotional to finally say goodbye to Northampton.
He said: “It’s terribly sad to leave Northampton, after all, 83 years is a long time to be based in a town, and I’ve been here 31 years myself.”
The company announced the closure of their Northampton branch in the middle of June.
Since then, thanks to a clearance sale, they have had the busiest six weeks in their history.
Mr Moseley said: “It’s been manic since we made the announcement. The Saturday after the news came out was the busiest we’ve ever had.
“We were absolutely inundated with our loyal customers who came in to wish us well and say they were sorry we were closing.”
The company now does 85 per cent of its business online, leading to the decision to close the Northampton shop.
The firm will keep its shop in Rugby, but that is much smaller than the branch in Northampton.
The building in Bridge Street, which White & Bishop owns, is now up for sale.
The store was first opened by Walter White in 1930, supplying country and work wear to the farmers of the county.
It later became known for sheepskin coats and camping equipment, and in the late 1970s, the outdoor centre was added.
