Road deaths total reaches 2011 figure in six months

Concern has been raised after the number of road deaths in the county this year reached 19 - equalling the number of fatalities in the whole of 2011.

On Sunday, a 60-year-old man from Cambridgeshire became the 19th person to die on
the county’s roads, after his BMW crashed into a new roundabout on the A6 near Burton Latimer.

The latest tragedy means the number of deaths in the first six months of the year has already equalled the total number of
fatalities in 2011.

The alarming increase comes after Northamptonshire County Council last year pulled its funding for the county’s casualty reduction partnership. The move meant the road safety initiative was disbanded, safety initiatives axed and the county’s speed cameras turned off.

Last month, the Tory controlled county council refused a motion to turn the speed cameras back on.

However, speaking after the latest tragedy, Deputy Chief Constable Suzette Davenport, of Northamptonshire Police, said there was so far no evidence that increased road speeds were to blame for the rising number of road deaths.

She said: “Tragically, 19 people have now lost their lives on our roads this year and our thoughts, as always, are with those who have lost loved ones.

“Our investigations to date have not revealed any common themes between these collisions. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of prevention. Every motorist has a responsibility to do as much as they can to prevent themselves becoming another road death statistic.”

She said officers were to increase their focus on the socalled Fatal Four campaign to target the use of mobile phones when driving, drink-driving, seatbelts and speeding.

Ms Davenport said police were also working to ensure the county’s roads were safe for drivers and pedestrians.
