Shoppers will be able to park for free in three Northampton car parks on every Saturday in August.

The St John’s, St Michael’s and Mayorhold car parks will be free for each of the five Saturdays this month, trialling a “major new car parking initiative” launched by Northampton Borough Council.

Sundays will continue to be free, and the free parking for one hour during the week will be extended to two hours.

The trial will run from August 1 to 31, and will then be evaluated to assess the impact, and decide if it will be continued in the future.

Council leader, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm), said: “We’re committed to providing convenient, safe and reasonably priced parking to help businesses, attract visitors and improve the local economy.

“We hope that everyone will take advantage of this free car parking trial and enjoy the great shops, restaurants and cultural events that our town has to offer.”

Councillor Tim Hadland, (Con, Old Duston), cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We’re always looking for opportunities to improve the town centre for visitors and businesses as that is one of our top priorities. Parking is an issue that is often raised with us by local companies and it is something we have been working with the Town Centre BID on for some time.”

Later this year, new graphic signs will be installed on the main entrance roads to the town centre, directing drivers to the closest and most convenient spaces, and providing information on availability.
