Whittlebury Park’s Charlie Salter has become one of the youngest players in Northamptonshire history to win the County Boys title after a thrilling victory at Northampton GC.
Aged just 13, Salter emphasised his talent and courage as he beat 2012 winner and reigning county men’s champion Jack Brown (Brampton Heath) in a four-hole play-off.
After shooting a level par opening 72 to sit three off the pace, the five-handicapper bagged six birdies in eight holes from the fifth in a brilliant afternoon score of 68 to finish level with Brown.
With both lads parring the first play-off hole, Salter took control with a birdie on the par three 16th hole before adding two more pars on 17 and 18 to secure the plaudits.
Northants County’s Rhys Taylor, who was third in the gross category, carried away the net prize.
