Sadly the 2012 World Conker Championships at Ashton have been cancelled, but a string of other villages have stepped in to hold their own events this weekend.
The Orlingbury Unofficial Conker Happening (OUCH) will take place on the village green this Sunday, with registration taking place from 1.30pm. Play starts at 2pm and the cost is £1 per entrant. Norty’s licensed bar will be providing refreshments. Entry forms are available from Andy by calling 01933 402852 or logging on to www. orlingbury.info
Another alternative event for conkers fans will take place on Sunday at the Shuckburgh Arms in Southwick. There will be a maximum of 128 competitors.
To take part in the competition the price is £10 for adults and £1 for children. Admission is free for those not taking part. Parking will be £2 and the action starts at 10.30am. For more information log onto www. shuckburghpub.co.uk
Also on Sunday, starting at noon, The Ship Inn, in Oundle, will be welcoming visitors to its own conker championship, with the event taking place behind the pub next to the patio bar.
There will be different competing groups for ladies, men and juniors aged up to 14. Places are limited to a maximum of 32 men and 32 ladies, so those hoping to take part need to register early. The entrance fee is £1 for children and £2 for adults.
There will be a barbecue and a wide selection of real ales, ciders and beers. Sunday lunch and other meals will be available as usual.
Visitors and competitors are asked to take unstrung conkers. For more information, call The Ship Inn on 01832 273918.
