A paranoid schizophrenic who told police he was “disappointed” he had not killed his key worker after stabbing him in the back with an eight-inch knife, has been sectioned.

Gary Daniels, aged 40, who was already the subject of a community treatment order, launched a vicious knife attack in Northampton on January 26, this year.

The victim went to Daniels’ flat, in Abington Avenue, to give him his medication.

Northampton Crown Court heard the support worker turned his back on Daniels to look inside a medicine cabinet and then felt a “hard punch to his left-hand side”.

He turned around and realised Mr Daniels was clutching a kitchen knife.

Police later arrested Daniels in a nearby pub, where he told them his intention was “to kill” his key worker, because he had made him feel “resentful”.

He told officers he was “disappointed I didn’t kill him.”

Judge Rupert Mayo sentenced Daniels to a hospital as well as a ‘restriction order’, meaning he will not be discharged from hospital unless the Secretary of State for Justice or a tribunal rules it is safe for him to be released.

He said: “I am satisfied that this is necessary for the protection of the public.”
