A 45-year-old man from Northampton has admitted stealing two child’s tracksuits from Sports Direct but denied stealing a sports bra.
Anthony Elliott, of Brookside Meadow, Kings Heath, Northampton, appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to stealing items of clothing from the shop in Abington Street.
The court heard that Elliott was seen in the store on August 7 and a member of staff saw him crouch down and put items of clothing in a bag.
Elliott was then detained by staff after he attempted to exit the store using the escalator.
Stella Moses, prosecuting, said store staff recovered two child’s tracksuits and a Nike sports bra from the bag.
Elliott pleaded guilty on the basis that he had stolen the tracksuits but denied stealing the sports bra.
Waqar Ali, defending, said it was a “moment of madness” by Elliott who accepts he put the child’s tracksuits in his bag.
Elliott was given a 12-month conditional discharge. He must pay costs of £85 and victim surcharge of £15.
