The Cobblers have been drawn at home against npower League One side Leyton Orient in the southern section quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The match will be played in the week beginning December 3, and is the reward for Tuesday night’s 2-1 second round win over Colchester United.

Orient will be the third league one side that Town will have played in this season’s competition, with Aidy Boothroyd’s men also having seen off Milton Keynes Dons in the first round.

Orient have had a similar start to their league season as the Cobblers have, and the Os currently sit 14th in the league one table, having picked up 13 points from their 10 games to date.

They are managed by former Cobblers assistant boss Russell Slade, who spent a couple of years at Sixfields, first as head of the youth section and then as number two to Kevin Wilson.

The teams haven’t met since April, 2009, when Stuart Gray’s side were 3-1 winners at Brisbane Road thanks to goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa, Aleksandar Prijovic and Ikechi Anya.

Their most recent meeting at Sixfields was earlier that season, when the match ended 1-1 - Liam Davis the Town man on the mark.

The clubs have met once in the competition, with the Os winning an Autoglass Trophy tie 2-1 at the County Ground in December, 1991.

Full draw: Southern section: Northampton Town v Leyton Orient, Southend United v Brentford, Torquay United or Yeovil Town v Wycombe Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United.

Northern section: Crewe Alexandra v Doncaster Rovers, Bury v Preston North End, Port Vale v Bradford City, Coventry City v Notts County or Sheffield United.
