Jim Mallinder hailed the Pisi brothers after they played starring roles in Saints’ 24-15 Heineken Cup victory against Glasgow Warriors.

Ken Pisi was handed the man of the match award, while brother George picked up two tries in an all-action display against the Scottish side at Franklin’s Gardens.

It had looked like Saints would slip to defeat in their first European encounter of the season as the Warriors surged into a 15-0 lead inside the first half an hour.

But two tries from centre George, in his first start since recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up against Worcester, and a sizzling show from wing Ken led the fightback.

Stephen Myler and Vasily Artemyev added second-half scores to help Saints secure a 24-15 victory and go level at the top of pool 4 with Irish side Ulster.

But it was the Samoan stars who caught the eye and Mallinder expressed his excitement at seeing the siblings combine superbly for his side’s second try.

“He’s playing well is Ken,” said the Saints boss. “He’s played really well in the past couple of weeks and he played well again today.

“We’re really pleased we’ve got the two Pisi brothers playing for us. They’re a massive threat in those outside channels. Very good.

And he added: “The second was a great try. It’s always disappointing when you have players out through injury but with George and Ken in the team we’re really exciting out in those channels.”

Glasgow had looked good for their 15-0 lead as Josh Strauss and former Saint Sean Lamont crossed the whitewash.

But Saints fought back and Mallinder was pleased with his side’s never-say-die attitude.

“It could have gone a different way,” he admitted. “Glasgow are a quality side, they showed that. They’ve got a big, heavy pack, a back row who get round the field and make it difficult for you and a backline who take their chances.

“We had our chances in the first 30 minutes, we didn’t take them, Glasgow did, which put us under a bit of pressure, but what was pleasing was the way we came back.

“We kept our composure and scored two tries before half-time, one just after half-time and in the second half we controlled the game.”
