JUST over two years ago, Macmillan Cancer Support came to us to ask for our support to raise £1.55 million for a new cancer treatment unit at Northampton General Hospital. We were delighted to do so.

And even more delighted when the new, state-of-the-art haemotology unit was officially opened this week by the Countess of Halifax, Macmillan president.

The charity appeal started when a patient gave a donation after he was treated at the old unit, which was too small and needed improving. An incredible succession of fund-raising events followed with Chron readers taking the appeal to their heart.

Donations ranged from a few pounds from a coffee morning to many thousands of pounds from high-profile events such as the Strictly Northampton dance competition.

As the money rolled in, Macmillan was able to instruct builders and the work began.

Nurses moved in to their new unit a few months ago and are delighted with the modern facilities, which make treating life-threatening conditons a more pleasant experience for both medical staff and patients.

Another £300,000 is needed to complete the project but we have no doubt that our readers will finish the job.
