Lorry driver remains in a ‘serious’ condition after M1 crash in hospital

An Irish lorry driver remains in a “serious” condition in hospital following a four hour battle to free her after a horror crash on the M1 in yesterday.

The 21-year-old female lorry driver involved in the crash at around 6.20am yesterday was trapped in the wreckage of her vehicle for four and a half hours as firefighters battled to free her.

She also had to undergo a blood transfusion at the scene.

The crash happened between junction 16 and 15a when the lorry crashed into a a blue Suzuki Ingnis, which had pulled onto the hard shoulder.

The 63-year-old woman driver of the car, who is from Essex, was stood at the top of an embankment and was not injured in the incident.

The lorry then crashed into a bridge support causing significant damage.

The southbound carriageway was closed after the crash to allow repairs to the road and was only reopened at 5pm.

Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) staff treated the driver while firefighters battled to free the patient and the helicopter pilot flew to pick up doctors and a consultant surgeon from University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire.

The air ambulance also had to land on the northbound carriageway, closing the whole road for a period of time.
