An Irish pub in Northampton has scooped the top prize at the Best Bar None awards, held last night.

Winners and runners-up of the Best Bar None awards were presented with their plaques and certificates at a ceremony, at O’Neills, in The Drapery, along with representatives from the 25 premises who have been accredited this year.

The Swan & Helmet, in Clare Street, won the Best Pub Award with The Abington, in Wellingborough Road, awarded the runner-up place.

The Moon on the Square, in Northampton’s Market Square, won Best Town Centre Bar with Revolution, in Bridge Street, runner up.

In the Best Club or Late Night Venue award, Aspers Casino scooped the top prize.

The awards were presented by Chief Superintendent Paul Fell from Northamptonshire Police and Joanna Dring from Carlsberg UK.

Ch Supt Fell said: “As part of Operation Challenge, reducing alcohol-related crime and violence is a priority for us and this is a great example of one of the many ways we work with our partners to tackle it.

“Best Bar None is a catalyst for the successful regulation of the night-time economy and strengthens the relationship between the licensed trade, police and local authorities. What this means is that we are all working together effectively to make sure that Northampton is a safer place for people to enjoy a night out and reduces the risk of them becoming victims, or offenders, of violent crime.”

The awards aim to improve the knowledge and skills of licensees and bar staff and enforcement and regulation agencies.

This year’s accredited premises are: The Abington, Aspers Casino, Barratts, Borjia, The Cordwainer, The Eastgate, Fever, The Frog & Fiddler, The Golden Horse, The Goose on Two Streets, Groove, Hakamou, Jeckyll & Hyde, The Moon on the Square, NB’s Sports Bar, O’Neills, The Penny Whistle, Revolution, Sir Pickering Phipps, Student Union (Northampton University), The Sun, The Swan & Helmet, Toby Carvery (East Hunsbury), Urban Tiger and The Whitehills.
