A former special Pc who now runs a firm to help catch dangerous drivers on camera has confirmed he hopes to become police commissioner.
Matt Stockdale, aged 42, becomes the second person to confirm his intention to stand for the role, which will come into post following elections in November.
Mr Stockdale worked as a special constable in the county for seven years and now runs policewitness.com, a firm which aims to arm motorists with in-car cameras to catch dangerous drivers on film.
He promised, if elected, to hold the force to account, make Northamptonshire Police more accountable and put his views across “candidly” to the chief constable, if necessary.
Mr Stockdale, who intends to stand as an independent candidate, said: “My issue is if a political person comes in we are going to have much more of the same. It will all be about politics, you will never get a straight answer and they will have to check everything with their party before they speak. I also think unless you have experience of running multi-million pound budgets you won’t have clue how to do this job.”
He said his experience as a special officer, spending most of his time on the frontline of Northamptonshire Police, would also prove invaluable in the job. He added: “I know Northamptonshire Police and I think that is very important for the candidate. This is a huge opportunity for the general public and if they understand the role then it will make a huge difference to the way the police operate in Northamptonshire.”
John Norrie is the only other candidate to confirm his intention to stand so far. The Conservative Party is expected to select its candidate tomorrow.
