Adebayo Akinfenwa says the Cobblers squad will ‘keep their feet on the ground’ despite climbing to within two points of the npower League Two play-offs with a win over rock-bottom Wycombe Wanderers.
Akinfenwa scored twice - with Chris Hackett notching the third - as Town sank Wycombe 3-1 at Sixfields, although the visitors hit the post twice in a decent performance.
But it was Northampton who picked up a victory, their second in a row in the league and one which takes their goal haul to 10 in their past three outings.
Despite the team starting to come into some very promising form, Akinfenwa is maintaining a realistic approach and says the festive period will be as crucial as ever to the club’s aspirations.
“At the moment things are going very well and we know football can change really quickly but we’re scoring goals and we’re winning games,” he said.
“We’ve got a good work ethic here, the gaffer knows what he wants and we’ve got a really good spirit among the players as well.
“We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. It’s a marathon and not a sprint and we’re in a good place at the moment but we’ve got a lot of games coming up.
“Christmas is a defining point where lots of points are gained and lost and although our feet are on the ground at the moment, we are in line with our aims for the season.”
Akinfenwa’s first goal was a typically powerful header and his second a confident penalty after Clive Platt was fouled.
The brace takes his tally for the season to 12 but it could have been a second hat-trick in a week with a second-half header hitting the bar.
“For the first one, it’s a great cross from Chris Hackett,” he said. “Everybody knows what he brings to the team with his energy and his skill and he did all the work, really.
“All I had to do was put it in, and then the second one was a penalty. They say these things come in twos and I thought I was going to get another hat-trick today but that’s how it goes.
“I’m not going to lie, I thought the header was going to drop in off the bar but it wasn’t to be.
“It took me 12 years to get my first hat-trick but hopefully it won’t take that long for my next one.”
