Jim Mallinder has refused to comment on speculation linking Leicester fly-half George Ford with a move to Saints.

It has been suggested in a national newspaper that Ford was set to leave Welford Road when his contract expires next summer, with Saints and Bath the likely suitors.

Northampton currently have two first-team No.10s on their books, with Stephen Myler and Ryan Lamb battling it out for a starting spot.

But there have been rumours Saints will be in the market for a new fly-half as they look to plan for next season.

Mallinder admits squad building continues at Franklin’s Gardens, but would not be pressed on the Ford issue.

The Saints boss said: “Who’s talked about him? I never talk about rumours. It’s not the best thing to do.”

And he added: “It’s ongoing. You look at your team, you look at who you want to keep and you look at the options who are out there to fill.

“We’re constantly looking at players we’ve got in the squad who we want to keep and constantly looking at other options and negotiations are always ongoing.”

Saints are back in Aviva Premiership action on Saturday when they entertain London Welsh at Franklin’s Gardens.

The game kicks-off at 1pm to avoid a clash with England’s Test match with South Africa at Twickenham, a match that will feature Saints forward Tom Wood in the starting line-up.
