Oxford United defender Andy Whing suffered a broken nose when he clashed with Cobblers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa last season - and he can’t wait to cross swords with the big man again on Saturday afternoon.

The Us defender suffered a clout from Akinfenwa in the opening minutes of Town’s match at the Kassam Stadium last December.

The accidental clash resulted in the Oxford man suffering a broken nose and a split lip, but it was Whing who had the last laugh as Oxford won the game 2-0.

And far from fearing taking on Akinfenwa tomorrow, Whing is relishing the chance to resume battle with the 13-goal Cobblers man (ko 3pm).

Whing said: “He (Akinfenwa) didn’t mean it, he was just trying to get across me.

“I think it was a broken nose and split lip inside the first 20 seconds!

“He’s a massive unit, I’ve played against him quite a few times and he can shift, he’s not slow.

“For his size he’s quite mobile, but we know what his strengths are – he doesn’t need to jump, he just gets his body in the way.

“We’ve got a plan to try and deal with him, hopefully that will work.”

Oxford go into the game in the middle of a poor run of form that has seen them slip to 18th in npower League Two, and manager Chris Wilder is under pressure to start winning games - and quickly.

Whing is aware of the pressure he, his team-mates and his manager are under, and he said: “They’re all big games at the minute with the position we’re in and we want to pretty much start our season, really

“We’re looking for a big result.”

Talking about the reasons for Oxford’s poor form, Whing added: “It’s all everyone here talks about, how can we do better?

“There’s a lot of soul searching individually as well as in our units.

“There isn’t a lot wrong, but obviously we need to fine tune a few things and go from there.

“Hopefully if we can pick up a few clean sheets that would give us a bit of confidence to go and win a few games.”
