Fire Brigade warns more people could die in white goods fires

More people will die in fires caused by faulty white goods - such as tumble dryers - unless the Government takes urgent action, fire chiefs have warned.

The London Fire Brigade said that in the wake of the Grenfell Fire and following a series of devastating white goods fires in the capital over the past six years, the Government have yet to introduce any safety recommendations.

The call for action also comes one year on from a blaze caused by a faulty Indesit tumble dryer which spread through homes in a tower block in Shepherd’s Bush.

Now London Fire Brigade, the Mayor of London and other campaigners have written to Prime Minister Theresa May demanding action before more people lose their lives.

The brigade says one fire a day in London involves white goods, and June’s tragic fire at Grenfell Tower was started in a fridge freezer in a flat on the lower floor.

Between 2010 and 2016 there have been nine fire deaths and 298 injuries as a result of fires involving white goods in London.

Life-saving action

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: “What the Government needs to do to save lives is clear. London’s fire crews go to around one fire a day involving white goods, and it’s only a matter of time before there is another tragedy.

“How many more devastating white goods fires do there have to be before the Government makes it easier for consumers to check whether their fridges and freezers are on the recall list?

“Worse still, the second hand white goods market is under regulated and there is little to stop people buying kitchen appliances which pose a serious fire risk.

“We also want business to step up and change how some fridges and freezers are manufactured. All new refrigeration and freezing appliances should have a non-combustible backing as standard.

“Many models still use a flammable plastic backing, which offers very little protection against the foam inside catching alight if a fire starts.

“This is not the time for further reports and recommendations, it’s time to take action.”

Mayor speaks out

Joining the call for a government response is Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said: “The Government’s delay in implementing these recommendations is simply inexcusable.

“With on average one white goods fire every single day in London, if an item is on the official ‘recall’ list, this information must be easily accessible so these fires can be prevented.

“The terrible tragedy at Grenfell Tower in June is a stark reminder of just how devastating a fire caused by faulty white goods can be.

“Now, a year since the tragic fire in Shepherd’s Bush which led to these important recommendations, the Government and manufacturers must urgently act to help prevent any further tragedies and keep Londoners safe.”

The Brigade has made a series of recommendations calling for action to make white goods safer as part of its Total Recalls campaign.

A coroner at the inquest of Santosh Benjamin Muthiah, who died after saving his wife and two children from a fire which was caused by a faulty Beko fridge freezer a their Harrow home, recommended a series of measures to improve product recalls in 2014.

However, the Fire Brigade say the changes are also still to be made.

London Fire Brigade’s recommendations include a single, publicly accessible register of product recalls, with international recalls to be included on the UK recall register, and for recalls to be better publicised to reduce confusion.

They have also called for greater regulation of secondhand appliances, changes to the way fridges and freezers are manufactured and for all appliances to be marked with model and serial number.

Bank of Mum and Dad lends kids £2.3bn to pay the rent

The Bank of Mum and Dad will fund £2.3 billion of rent for their offspring, contributing on average £415 to every payment.

Parents now helps 9 per cent of renters across the UK with their financial commitments to their landlords on nearly 460,000 properties.

The research, from Legal & General, shows that the Bank of Mum and Dad now funds over a quarter (26 per cent) of all UK property transactions, putting it on a par with the ninth largest mortgage lender in the UK (up from tenth last year).

Previous Legal & General/Cebr research showed the Bank of Mum and Dad will support £6.5billion of lending to first time buyers to get on the property ladder this year, meaning parents will fund some £8.8 billion in 2017 helping children to either rent or buy a home.

Dan Batterton, Fund Manager, Build to Rent at LGIM Real Assets, said: ““It is a real challenge for young people who are reliant on parental handouts just to make the rent. The intergenerational inequality that creates the demand for BoMaD funding continues to widen and now it’s affecting renters too.

“The lack of affordable housing, low wage growth relative to inflation and burdens of student debt mean that many kids can’t even rent somewhere without significant contributions from their family.

“Parents want to help their kids get on in life, and the Bank of Mum and Dad is a testament to their generosity, but it is also a symptom of our broken housing market.”

Ripley admits Northants are going to have to ‘fight hard’ to get back into Notts clash

Northants coach David Ripley admits his players face an uphill battle to get back into the match after a dramatic first day of their Specsavers County Championsip Division Two clash at Nottinghamshire.

A total of 20 wickets fell on day one on at Trent Bridge as top took on third place in the table on Monday, with Northants bowling out the home side for 213, before being shot out themselves for just 141.

The fact the County reached that total was mainly down to a rearguard action from Josh Cobb, who hit 46 not out, and Richard Gleeson (25) with the pair rescuing their team from a precarious 84 for eight.

Notts then eased to 19 without loss in their second innings, to lead by 91 runs, and it means Northants will need to make early inroads in day two on Tuesday if they are to stay in the game.

“When we were looking at the wicket on Monday morning, I wouldn’t have envisaged that that would be the outcome of the day,” said Ripley.

“It looked a goodish pitch with a little tinge of green and that made us wonder as to whether to bowl or bat.

“The overhead conditions and the sun meant that both sides thought that batting would be the safest option.

“There was some good seam bowling and some indifferent batting, so the game has rolled on quickly.

“I thought we bowled well and didn’t get the rewards we deserved in the first hour; we went past the bat quite a bit.

“Riki Wessels and his partnerships towards the end hurt us a little bit and now we are going to have to fight hard to get ourselves back in the game.”

Former Northants man Wessels top-scored with 69, and steered the tail well, with Notts recovering from 167 for seven to post what now looks a good total.

For Northants, Mohammed Azharullah was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five for 63 from 14 overs, while there was also a four-wicket haul for Gleeson, who claimed four for 38 from 9.1 overs.

Steven Mullaney at the top of the order made 58 for Notts.

The County were without Ben Duckett in their reply, with the left-hander missing out due to an injured hand, and that meant they openend up with Rob Newton and David Murphy, playing his first Championship match of the season.

The pair put on 28 for the first wicket before England pace man Jake Ball dismissed Newton, and from there things fell apart pretty quickly as Northants lost eight wickets for just 56 runs, with Alex Wakely, Richard Levi, Rob Keogh and Adam Rossington mustering just 16 runs between them.

The standout performer for Northants wasa Cobb. whose unbeaten 46 came off 85 deliveries, and included two sixes and four boundaries.

The main men with the ball for Notts were Brett Hutton and Luke Wood, who both claimed three wickets, while Ball and Mullaney claimed two apiece.

Hutton was delighted with how the day eventually panned out for his side, and said: “There was a lot happening and there were quite a lot of runs scored as well as all the wickets but, most importantly, we are in a strong position and hopefully can capitalise on that.

“We knew they were a good bowling attack and that the pitch would probably do a little bit early on but it had a little bit more pace than we expected but we assessed it quite quickly.

“I thought Mull (Steven Mullaney) was outstanding through the tricky new ball period and then Riki showed his experience to bat through with the tail and get us past 200, every run was vital.

“Northants batted positively, so it was nice for us to get wickets at regular intervals and we are happy with how it went.”

Most recent meeting: Saturday, March 12, 2016 – Northampton 1 (Marquis) Cambridge 1 (Spencer)

Record v Cambridge: P36 W14 D9 L13

Opposition view: “I’ll make changes again because I think this competition really allows us to have a look at the squad,” U’s boss Shaun Derry told Cambridge News. “We did that last year and we managed to progress in the competition. We’ll do it again and you’ll see a different type of team, but I’m expecting that level of performance that I witnessed on Saturday.”

James Heneghan’s preview: The Checkatrade Trophy, or Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, or whatever it’s called, does not particularly resonate with fans but, given the context of Northampton’s problems so far this season, Tuesday’s first group stage game takes on extra significance.

Sure, whether or not the Cobblers go on to win the competition is perhaps not at the forefront of many people’s minds, but after five straight defeats, the latest of which came in such disappointing fashion against rivals Peterborough on Saturday, it’s essential they get a win on the board sooner rather than later.

Tonight’s home clash with League Two Cambridge United, the first of three group stage games with Peterborough and Southampton U21s to come, allows them an opportunity to do so.

The competition has undergone some minor tweaks from last season’s much-maligned format. The key changes for this year include more prize money, regionalisation until the quarter-final stage and alteration to team selection to allow clubs more freedom when picking their sides.

The amendments have been made following the apathy felt towards the competition last season, which resulted in poor attendances and games played in eerily empty stadiums, though it’s difficult to imagine it will be much different this time around.

And the farcical situation of having a penalty shoot-out to decide who wins an extra point, even if both competing teams are out, remains.

Predicting either the formation or starting line-up for this game is something of a minefield. Changes are expected but, equally, Edinburgh’s eagerness to notch that first win may well mean a stronger team than what you would usually see in this competition.

That said, this game does provide an opportunity for the likes of George Smith, Regan Poole, Leon Lobjoit and Joe Iaciafano to get some much-needed game-time having barely featured so far.

Prediction: Northampton 2 Cambridge 1

Psychobilly acts return for Bedlam Breakout weekender in Northampton

$

Bedlam Breakout is back in town next week for three days the best psychobilly acts from across the world.

When American rockabilly collided with British punk in the early 1980s, a rousing new genre was created.

Taking its name from the song One Piece at a Time and using imagery from horror films with a dash of humour, psychobilly was always an underground movement.

Nevertheless, it has grown to a size where it can command its own festival in the heart of Northampton.

Peter Dennis spoke to festival organiser Tobe Wright ahead of Bedlam’s about the origins of Bedlam and its return to town.

“We had been putting on psychobilly gigs at The Racehorse pub in the mid to late 90s,” explains Wright.

“Interest was in decline in the UK at this point and we wanted to try to keep it all going.

“We eventually thought an all-dayer might generate more interest in the scene.”

From a modest start, Bedlam Breakout has become the UK's premier psychobilly festival with Wright explaining the Roadmender was an ideal venue for the event.

“The original Bedlam crew are all from Northampton,” he explains.

“It's perfect really as we are central in the country, we have all major travel links for those coming to the festival and the venue is perfect.

“The Roadmender is ideal, great guys run it, superb staff with a very good sound to top it off. Its Perfect.”

Boasting an impressive 24 bands over three days, Bedlam Breakout also aims to give Northampton an international flavour by attracting bands from across the globe.

“We have two bands from Canada at this festival - The Raygun Cowboys and an old school psychobilly band called The Lab Ratz,” explains Wright.

“The Cracks from Japan are a heavy duty punky band with all the crazy horror make up to boot.

“The Milwaukee Wildmen are from Holland and put on a great high powered show and The Tumblin' Go Go's are also from Holland and play superb rockabilly with a kick.

“We also have The Trillionairs from Germany, Shaky from Sweden, Sleepwalkerz from France and The Phantom Rockers, an old psychobilly band now based in the USA.”

Aside from the bands, Bedlam Breakout also acts fans from all over the world to Northampton.

“We’ve had people from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, all over Scandinavia, mainland Europe, USA, Brazil, Chile. Let's just say they are fanatical about this genre.”

There are also plenty of British bands at this year’s festival.

Saturday's headliners King Kurt hail from London. Formed in 1981 they soon gained notoriety for their rowdy concerts which would often involve good natured food fights (although Bedlam promises to be 'mess free'!) and the band often appeared in the national single and album charts. On Sunday festival closers Demented Are Go hail from Cardiff and, as part of the first wave of bands, were highly influential in the psychobilly scene.

They released their eight studio album in 2012.

“All the UK bands range vastly in styles from the teddy boy rockabilly of Furious Rock N' Roll on Friday to the hillbilly sounds of Thee Scarecrows aka on Saturday to the amazing vocals of Colbert Hamilton and the Nitros playing neo rockabilly on Sunday,” explains Wright.

“It's a fine mix and showcases what the scene has to offer these days.

“The UK scene is smaller than, say, the German of Californian scene but it's a healthy underground scene with a fanatical following.”

With such a diverse global scene, organisers aim to bring bands with the right attitude to the festival.

“We like to promote new UK bands so they have a crowd to play to,” explains Wright.

“We bring over small foreign bands for the UK to see and bring over the 'big guns' which in turn raises the awareness of Bedlam to people around the world.

“We do try to make sure these bands are good as it's people's hard earned cash they are spending and we don't want to put on below par bands.”

All three days are followed by after parties at The Bear pub with bands usually around until the early hours.

With a team of ten helping to bring Bedlam Breakout together, Tobe said: “The crowds keep coming and when we see the enjoyment that the crowds have, the bands have.

“That is the main reason we do it. It's a labour of love.”

Friday doors open at 7pm. Tickets £10 on the door.

Saturday and Sunday Doors open at 12:30pm. Tickets £30 on the door.

Kettering man jailed after one of the county’s first convictions for ‘revenge porn’

$

Police have warned against the dangers of sharing images online after one of the first ever convictions of a man for ‘revenge porn’ in Northamptonshire.

A 27-year-old Kettering man was jailed for three years earlier this month after being convicted under new legislation to tackle so-called revenge porn.

The defendant had pleaded guilty to one count of disclosing private images or films with intent to cause distress under section 33 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment and two further charges of sending malicious communications.

He was sentenced to three years for harassment and a further 12 months for each other charge, to run concurrently.

Northampton Crown Court heard the accused had met his victim through the social media site Tinder.

During a two-month relationship, private images and films were sent between them with the consent being only the other person could see it.

However, the hearing was told the relationship went sour and, after it ended, he began sending numerous intimidating messages and then threats to send the images over the internet and to the victim’s father.

The court was told the victim’s images were subsequently posted online, through internet porn sites and dating sites, along with advertisements classifying her as an escort and inviting persons to attend her address for sex.

Multiple fake accounts were created in the victim’s name, with access to them through the defendant.

He would then talk to people making them believe it was the victim and invite them around to the victim’s family home at all hours on a daily basis.

Threatening text messages and emails were also sent to the victim and members of her family.

However, these were masked using websites located on the dark web which made it appear the messages came from the victim herself.

The victim’s father was also sent private images and films via email.

Prosecution evidence included a PayPal account used to pay for accounts and IP addresses linked back to his home WiFi.

Speaking after the hearing, DC Ryan Smedley of Northamptonshire Police said: “We are very happy with the sentence handed down today.

“Months of abuse by this individual led to months of work for an investigation involving CID, cybercrime officers and uniformed colleagues who were all involved doing research, interviews, searches, device interrogation and much more.

“This man believed he was clever, researching his devices before committing the offences, including searching Google for the legislation around revenge porn.

“He even used the dark web and software which masked some of what he did.

“However, using the internet always leaves a digital footprint somewhere.

“He wreaked havoc and distress against his victim and her family, resulting in evidence brought before the court that pushed him to enter guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity.

“This case serves as a reminder about the risks of knowing who you are talking to online and, particularly, the risks around sending private images and films to people you don’t know that well.

“The consequences for someone’s private life when a revenge porn attack happens can be incalculable: Worklife, social life and mental health can all be affected as a result of someone simply sending a naked image that is then shared on one site and shared by thousands of others.”

The defendant was also given a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting his victim.

In order to protect the victim’s identity, Northamptonshire Police will not be naming the defendant.

Northampton residents have recouped over £1.8million in PPI payouts, a firm has claimed.

The town has also come second in the Midlands for clawing back mis-sold payment protection insurance from their banks, according to claims company First Target Recoveries.

A spokesperson for First Target said: "WIth £1.8million reimbursed, Northampton customers could use their refunds to buy two rolls of 22-karat gold toilet paper with 150k left, pay to have lunch with the Apple CEO, Tim Cook 18 times or buy 698 bottles of the most expensive Moet & Chandon."

Double Olympic medal-winning cyclist Becky James will show her continuing support for Northampton’s Cynthia Spencer Hospice by setting off the riders at the county’s annual fundraising bike ride next month.

The former Welsh international, who announced her retirement from the sport last week after picking up two silvers on the track in Rio last year, will launch Cycle4Cynthia on September 24.

She lives in Northamptonshire with her partner British Lion, Wales and Saints winger George North, and said she’s thrilled to be firing the starting hooter, thereby following in the footsteps of celebrities who have previously generously performed the honour, including singer-songwriter Curtis Stigers, former Generation Game hostess Isla St Clair, and Radio 2 DJ Jo Whiley.

"George and I went to the launch of the ride back in April and it was amazing to hear not only what a great event it is from former participants, many of whom have ridden in it for years, but also what it means to those patients and families who are supported by the incredible team at the hospice," said Becky.

"Cycling has been such a big part of my life and it’s a great thing to do, whether you’re a regular rider or just fancy the occasional pedal on a sunny Sunday, so I really hope that lots of cyclists will join us and make this the biggest and best year yet."

Last September more than 1,100 riders of all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities saddled up, raising £76k for the hospice and this year its fundraising manager, John Helm, hopes Becky’s involvement will help to better both of those figures.

He said: "Cycle4Cynthia is the biggest fundraiser in the calendar for us so we would urge anyone with two wheels to come out and support us and meet this true sporting hero!

"Of course there are no prizes for crossing the line first, as Becky’s used to, but we do give everyone who takes part a commemorative medal, and there are also trophies for the largest team, the most sponsorship raised and the best fancy dress so if you’re feeling competitive, you can always give one of those a go!”

Cycle4Cynthia 2017 begins at 9am on Sunday, September 24 at Lamport Hall with five, 25 and 50 mile routes on offer. Entry is £15 for adults, £7.50 for children and £35 for families (rising after September 1).

For more information, including registering for the ride or to view the routes, visit www.cycle4cynthia.co.uk or call the hospice on 01604 678082 or email fundraising@cynthiaspencer.co.uk.

You can also purchase the limited edition C4C 2017 cycling jersey, priced at £25, from the hospice’s ebay site at www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/232432899749.
