Owners of a roadside cafe in Northampton say they have been swamped by motorbike enthusiasts from across the country after winning a prestigious gong.

Super Sausage, located on the A5 near Pottersbury, has been awarded the title of Britain's Best Biker Cafe for 2018 thanks to a public vote carried out by Motorcycle News (MCN).

The Murray family, who have run the venue for 10 years, beat off a 10-strong shortlist to claim the prize.

And the trophy has left them needing to order in more bacon and sausages than ever to cope with the increased demand.

Chris Murray, 57, said: "Since then we have just been mobbed by bikers - people are riding here from all over the country because we are right here in the middle of the UK.

"People are just flocking to us from all over."

The Murrays, who include Chris's wife Gail, 56, and son Simon, 21, credit their success to sourcing the best ingredients and friendly customer service.

"We are a traditional breakfast and lunch cafe," said Chris.

"Everything we get in - the bacon, the sausages - is all top-quality. We source the black pudding from Scotland

"We go out of our way to look after the customers - we make the bikers welcome here."

The latest award marks the third year in a row Super Sausage has won a nationwide cafe of the year competition having taken the crown of Britain's Best Cafe in 2016 and 2017.

Police have released an e-fit of a man they want to speak to in connection with a robbery in Northampton and are appealing for the public’s help to identify him.

The robbery happened at a property in Halswell Court, The Arbours, on Monday, February 18, at about 7.20pm. Police have revealed information about the crime today.

A police spokeswoman said: "Three men forced their way in through the back door, assaulted two occupants and then pushed them out of the front door.

"As they did so, one of the men pulled a gold necklace from around the neck of one of the occupants. The offenders then ran off down the road.

Witnesses to the incident, or anyone who thinks they recognise the man in the e-fit, are asked to contact Northamptonshire Police on 101.

Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Northampton university students left with no electricity after 12-hour power cut

Around 500 Northampton university students were left without electricity overnight when a power cut affected the Boughton Green Road halls of residence.

The electricity cut off at 4.30pm on Wednesday due to a fault in the adjacent site to the halls on Park Campus, which is being redeveloped into housing.

Power was fully restored at 5am the following morning thanks to a generator that was set with the help of Western Power Distribution (WPD).

One student told the Chron the heating and water was also cut off and that some residents had to throw out food in fridges and freezers.

A spokesman for the university said: "The university bears no responsibility for the loss of power to the Boughton Green Road halls on Wednesday evening, which was caused by a fault in the electricity supply network.

"However our priority is the safety of the students. Staff and the police were in attendance immediately and throughout the night to provide emergency lighting, offer support and advice to residents on keeping themselves safe, and later to provide sandwiches and snacks for those who had not gone to bed.

"Once it became clear that the outage may last some time, the university arranged for a generator to be installed which arrived at 5am and restored full power to the halls.

"Therefore residents were only without electricity for a few hours overnight."

The generator will remain at the halls until the fault is fixed.

A WPD spokesman said: "We attended the site at Boughton Green Road but we established there was a problem with the internal equipment at the site rather than any of our equipment.

"We advised and helped the university get a generator to help the students get power back."

Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital have agreed to join up with Voice, the free, confidential support service for anyone affected by crime in Northamptonshire.

The three organisations came together recently to sign an agreement that will see them working together to ensure patients and staff are able to access the specialist support provided by Voice.

“It’s important to the boards of both hospitals that our patients and staff are able to access the support they need,” said Alan Burns, chairman of NGH and KGH.

“Our staff don’t just see and treat many victims and witness of crime each year, sometimes they themselves are the victims of crime or witness crime taking place.

“Working with Voice means that our patients and staff will have access to specialist support and help when they need it.”

Fiona Campbell, chief executive of Voice, said: “As CEO of Voice for Victims and Witnesses I am delighted to sign off this service level agreement with Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital.

“Our vision is that Voice will deliver a range of personally tailored services that provide free and confidential information, guidance, support and specialist help to victims or witnesses of crime, serious fire and road traffic accidents when they need it.

“If you are a member of staff or a member of the public, Voice is here to help you cope, and recover from the crimes that you have been subjected to.”

A popular tapas bar in Northampton is to open a second branch this spring.

Manager of La Terraza Tapas Bar Kellie Griffin said she aims to open the new spot in Latchet Lane, Upton "in a few weeks".

La Terraza in Grange Park is ranked fourth out of 434 in Northampton on Trip Advisor - so why does Kellie think it's so popular with eaters?

"I think it's the chilled environment and the friendly atmosphere", she said.

"We want the people who come in to have a nice time and we enjoy that.

"And the food is good too!"

The Upton branch of La Terraza will have a slightly different menu and serve coffee and brunch.

Kellie hopes to hire a trained barista to join her and her Spanish chefs.

"We thought there weren't many similar restaurants in the area and that a restaurant would work well there," said Kellie.

"We can't wait to see everybody when we open."

A new provider for the GP out of hours service has been appointed by the Northamptonshire CCGs (Corby CCG and Nene CCG).

From Monday (April 1) DHU Health Care will be operating the service for patients registered with a Northamptonshire GP.

Dr Emma Donnelly, clinical lead for urgent care, said: "The GP Out of Hours service provides a valuable service for patients who require urgent support from a GP when their practice is closed, including patients living in nursing and residential homes, and end-of-life patients requiring urgent support.

“We want to assure patients requiring access to an out of hours GP that they will still be able to access the same high-quality service they always have.“

Patients who urgently require a GP outside of core practice hours such as evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays and cannot wait until their practice re-opens will be able to access the service by calling NHS 111.

Northamptonshire nurseries will go under and jobs will be lost say early years providers hit by budget cuts

$

Northamptonshire nurseries will go under and staff will lose their jobs, early years providers have warned, as a £1.8m budget reduction will hit the sector from next week.

With just days to go before the start of the new financial year the 600 providers which look after more than 10,000 under-fives in the county are still not sure of what their new funding arrangements will be for next month.

The uncertainty comes on top of an 18-month payment fiasco in which hundreds of childminders and nurseries have been paid wrongly, with many being underpaid by thousands.

After a backlash earlier this month (March) against the proposed method of sharing out the funding cut across the different providers, the council, which sets the funding formula, said it would go back and look at different options.

At today’s (March 29) extraordinary meeting of the schools forum held at Nene Whitewater Centre in Northampton, a revised formula was discussed but the final decision will be made later this afternoon by the council’s director of children’s services Sally Hodges. The council has to let the Department for Education know of its formula within the next few days after the Government refused the council a time extension.

Nursery manager Rachel Hutchinson said the decisions were being made too late in the day.

She said: “You are going to bankrupt settings. We have had two weeks to get our heads around this.”

Lyndsey Barnett, who is head teacher of the two maintained nursery schools in Wellingborough, said the budget cut would put some nurseries into a negative balance.

She told the council’s officers at the meeting: “You have said today that you now want to establish a working group for the nursery settings. We have been trying to engage you in discussions for well over a year, and now just seems a little too late when many of the nursery schools will have to set deficit budgets for 2019-20. On these proposals both Croyland and Highfield will have an in-year deficit of over £70,000.”

Another head teacher of a maintained nursery school said budget reductions on such a scale would lead to service cuts.

The budget reductions are being imposed after a reduction from central Government . The original plan was to take away a quality supplement given to certain providers, but after this was agreed to be unfair the authority is now proposing to cut a special education needs supplement given to all staff as well as some budget savings from its central team.

The authority could have decided to make up the shortfall from government funding from other budgets but NCC senior officer Sharon Muldoon said £10m is to be taken from children’s services in Northamptonshire next year and that there is no additional money available.

The officer gave the providers a pledge that next year decisions would be made much earlier.

The council says there has been a £1.5m overspend this year in the early years budget.

After the meeting a number of providers said the effect of the cuts would be that there would most likely have to be staff losses in some nursery settings.

South African star Reinach is 'flying high' at Saints

$

Last season, there were just flashes of the class Cobus Reinach could offer Saints.

Often rotated with compatriot Nic Groom, Reinach struggled to really develop any consistency.

But this season, he has done just that.

In fact, Reinach has been that good that he is starting to realise his goal of becoming the best scrum-half in the Gallagher Premiership.

And last Friday night, he produced a performance worthy of that title.

Reinach ran the show as Saints delivered a stunning success at Welford Road.

Chris Boyd's men were in control from the moment Reinach finished off a rapid counter-attack, which started with Ahsee Tuala setting Tom Collins away.

Collins went on to score two tries of his own as Saints cruised into a 29-3 lead before taking their foot off the gas a little late on, seeing the game out to earn a 29-15 win.

It was the perfect way to round off an incredible seven days for Reinach, who helped Saints to lift the Premiership Rugby Cup at Franklin's Gardens five days earlier and who also welcomed his son into the world.

And Reinach said: "With my son being born, it was definitely the best week of my life. The other things are little add-ons.

"It was a great week, I felt like I was flying high so it was really good."

Reinach could be forgiven for thinking this could not only be his day, his week or his month, but it may also be his year.

The World Cup is coming up in Japan before 2019 is out, and Reinach must surely be on the radar of the South Africa coaches.

But the 29-year-old has nothing but Saints on his mind right now.

“My goal this year was to be the best I could be and to be the best nine in the Premiership,” Reinach said.

“If I can achieve that, then greater stuff may come. I don’t want to look too far into the future; saying I’m aiming for this or that.

“I just want to be the best I can be and hopefully I’ll get rewarded for that.

“You can always improve, I can always work on my basics and then there are the little bits of X-factor and do something out of the ordinary to change a game, I think I can step that up a little bit.

“If the team plays well, it’s easy to pick guys from a winning team.

"The possibilities are endless for us here at Saints at the moment.

"We've got a nice group, a young group and they bring a lot of energy.

"We've also got a few old heads so the sky is the limit."

It is clear that the arrival of Chris Boyd as boss and Sam Vesty as attack coach has helped to bring the best out of so many at Saints.

And Reinach is certainly one of those, having scored a massive 15 tries in just 19 starts this season.

"Chris came in and said he wants us to know what we're good at, to improve it and to make it the best in the world," Reinach said.

"Everyone is out here trying to be their own player, continue to build on their strengths and play as a team in that."

Now Reinach will look to help Saints stay on track for a treble as they travel to Clermont Auvergne for a huge Challenge Cup quarter-final on Sunday evening.

"It's not getting any easier," he said.

"We're playing some big teams coming up so we've celebrated last weekend and now it's about working hard, going back to the drawing board and doing it again."

17 Northampton takeaways with a zero or one star food hygiene rating

A total of 17 takeaways across Northampton currently have a zero or one-star rating, according to food hygiene inspectors.

Here are the 17 businesses in Northampton that fall under the ‘takeaway/sandwhich shop’ section on the Food Standards Agency website which have been ranked as zero or one star. The Food Standards Agency official listings show 16 takeaways were given a one-star rating or one got a zero. Each business is given a hygiene rating from 0-5 when it is inspected by a food safety officer from the council, and a database is kept by the Food Standards Agency. One-star rating indicates “major improvement necessary”, while zero rating signifies “urgent improvement necessary”. All ratings were correct at the time of publication, according to the FSA.

Lakeside shops and restaurant, with bridge to 'floating island', planned for Northampton

A plan to extend the banks of a Northampton lake and build three retail units there has been submitted to planning officers.

James Mackaness has asked Northampton Borough Council to approve his proposal to construct a building three made up of three self-contained units on new land extending into the lake off The Causeway in Great Billing.

He is also asking for permission to use the units in an unspecified combination of either shops, takeaways or restaurants, employing six people.

A unique twist to the development would be a bridge that would link to the existing floating island in the lake, which is part of Billing Aquadrome.

Documents submitted to the council by Arcteck Designs said: "The bridge to the island will be completed at some stage and may provide and outdoor seating and viewing platform in due course."

Although in a flood risk zone with a 'high probability' of flooding, the planning statement says the units will have a high enough floor level to keep them safe.

The building, which would come with 22 new parking spaces, have been designed to fit in with the nearby businesses.

The documents say: "The design of the building seeks to blend in with the surrounding buildings in so far that it will be traditionally built with facing brick external walls and have a slate/tiled roof to specifically blend in with the Oriental Paradise Restaurant adjacent and Marquis Motor Homes opposite."

Most recent meeting: Saturday, January 12, 2019: Clermont Auvergne 48 Saints 40 (European Challenge Cup quarter-final)

Tom's preview: If there is one thing we've learned about Saints this season it is to expect the unexpected.

It has been some roller-coaster ride since new boss Chris Boyd arrived to bring a breath of fresh air to Franklin's Gardens.

There have been some lows - such as unexpected home defeats to the likes of Newcastle and Bristol - and plenty of highs - like the wins against Exeter and Leicester.

Saints have shown no fear, especially during the past few months as they have adapted to the style of play the coaches have put in front of them.

And though they will be huge underdogs this weekend, you wouldn't bet against them doing something special at Stade Marcel Michelin.

They came so close to upsetting the odds against Clermont back in January, pushing Les Jaunards to the limit in a 48-40 defeat.

It was a vast improvement on the 41-20 defeat to the same side back in October and it demonstrated just how far Saints have come this season.

But it can't be denied that they will need their biggest and best performance by far if they are to win a quarter-final tie against a team who are so formidable.

Clermont are second in the Top 14 and steamrollered their way to maximum points in the Challenge Cup pool stages.

They possess an array of world stars capable of defeating any team on their day.

And they will not lack motivation in a knockout tie.

But Saints will go and try to play their own way.

The speed they played at last Friday at Leicester was frightening, and it almost felt as though you were watching the game on fast forward at times.

If they can get their hands on the ball and deliver that sort of tempo, they can shift this big Clermont team around, as they did in January.

But they must improve at the other end of the field from the two showings against Clermont so far.

The power and accuracy of the Top 14 team is so hard to live with, and they regularly ran over Saints in the two meetings earlier this season.

With perhaps the most vociferous set of supporters in Europe at their backs, they are capable of running riot.

And unless Saints can match their physicality, it will be another difficult night at Stade Marcel Michelin.

However, if Boyd's men can somehow get close to parity in the contact area, they have the ability to trouble their hosts.

Power can be beaten by pace.

But Saints will need plenty of both if they are to keep their hopes of the treble alive at the familiar French stomping ground on Sunday evening.

Tom's prediction: Clermont 30 Saints 22

Dismal Cobblers crash to defeat against 10-man Port Vale

$
0
0

Cobblers slipped to one of their worst defeats of the season when they were beaten 2-1 by lowly Port Vale despite playing over half the game with an extra man.

It was all going so well with 44 minutes gone at the PTS on Saturday, at which point Town led 1-0 through Sam Hoskins' fifth-minute goal and were also playing with an extra man following Vale skipper Leon Legge's straight red card.

But David Worrall equalised with virtually the final act of the half and the Cobblers fell apart in a terrible second-half performance, with Tom Pope's spot-kick condemning them to a hugely disappointing defeat.

The full-time whistle was greeted by plenty of boos from home supporters and no-one can blame them.

The Cobblers, whose eight-game unbeaten run now feels a lifetime ago, drop to 14th in League Two.

Keith Curle responded to last week's loss at Cheltenham Town by making four alterations to his Cobblers team as he recalled Aaron Pierre, Marvin Sordell, Jack Bridge and long-term absentee Shaun McWilliams to the starting line-up.

John-Joe O'Toole was one player to drop out while Jordan Turnbull failed to recover in time, but Cobblers were off to the perfect start with a goal inside five minutes.

Bridge, back in the side for the first time since February 23, delivered a superb cross from a short corner and Hoskins positioned himself perfectly to tap home after Charlie Goode's initial header was blocked.

Set-pieces would be a theme of the first-half and Town in particular carried a real threat from corners as David Buchanan's deep cross was headed back across goal by Ash Taylor for Hoskins, who flicked over on the edge of the six-yard box.

There were occasional moments of alarm for the home defence but Vale managed only half chances with David Cornell easily holding onto a header while Tom Conlon sliced over from range.

A slick move through the middle almost brought Town a second goal when Bridge spun his man on halfway and found Sordell, who slipped it back into Bridge inside the box but the midfielder snatched at his shot.

Ricky Miller was then inches away from converting Mitchell Clark's low cross but Vale's task became far header three minutes before half-time when visiting skipper Legge cynically hauled down Andy Williams as the last defender, leaving referee Neil Hair with the simple decision to bring out the red card.

However, Vale defied their numerical disadvantage to level on the cusp of half-time when Worrall pounced on sloppy defending, winning back possession and allowed to run clean through on goal before sliding underneath the onrushing Cornell.

Vale, clearly buoyed by the goal, started the second-half on top and Kyle Howkins headed at Cornell and Ricky Miller was close with two long-range attempts.

Despite struggling to make their extra man count, Town really should have restored their advantage when Goode picked out Pierre inside the penalty box but the defender fluffed his lines.

Curle had seen enough and replaced Williams and McWilliams with Dean Bowditch and Timi Elsnik but there was little improvement from his team and, as it turned out, that miss from Pierre would be Town's last genuine chance of the game.

So poor were the Cobblers during the second-half, it came as no surprise when the visitors moved in front. With 15 minutes to go, Goode was adjudged to have bundled over Cristian Monatno in the penalty box and Pope, only just on, converted from the spot with his first touch of the game.

The Cobblers had produced nothing since half-time to suggest they were capable of making a late comeback and that continued to be the case in a horribly disjointed end to the game.

It should have been worse for the home team too as Howkins shot over from a good position late on, although that didn't matter as Vale comfortably played out four minutes of stoppage-time to claim a precious win in their relegation battle.

Forthright Curle slams 'shocking' Cobblers for being 'nowhere near good enough' in Vale loss

$
0
0

Cobblers boss Keith Curle did not mince his words after Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Port Vale, describing his side's 'shocking' performance as being 'nowhere near good enough'.

Northampton were both one goal and one man to the good with 44 minutes played at the PTS as Sam Hoskins' early opener was followed by a red card for Vale skipper Leon Legge, seemingly putting Town on course for a third successive home victory.

But it all unravelled from there with David Worrall dragging the visitors level on the stroke of half-time before Tom Pope's late penalty punished an extremely lacklustre second-half display from the Cobblers.

Curle has previously defended his players in public but there was little of that after Saturday's defeat when he was forthright in his criticism for their performance.

"First and foremost, I need to be honest and I will be because that was nowhere near good enough," he said.

"If you don't do the basics right, you get found out and we didn't do the basics right. For the first 35 or 40 minutes, we were dominant and on the front foot.

"They then had a man sent off and we had players not doing what needs to be done and they don't do it quickly.

"When you're playing against 10 men, the messages are there, the information is there. Get the ball down and pass and play.

"We had times in the second-half when we had possession inside our own half and we passed the ball out of play. That tells me we are not good enough.

"Why go and get on the ball if all you're going to do is pass it out? It's shocking. We don't play the ball forward with purpose and with appreciation.

"The representation of this football club was poor, the understanding was poor and the fundamentals were poor."

On the decision to award Vale's winning penalty, when Charlie Goode bundled over Cristian Montano, Curle added: "The lad realised the ball was going off his head and he tried to buy a penalty, which he did.

"But, before that, Charlie Goode has seen the tackle and stopped the move but then he's got to make up that yard which allows the lad to get the wrong side of him. Again, that's basic defending and it needs to improve."

Opposition view: Askey aggrieved by 'ridiculous decision' despite win over Cobblers

Port Vale manager John Askey admitted he feared his side could lose 'by four or five' when they were down a goal and a man during Saturday's game against Northampton before eventually turning things around to win 2-1.

The visitors, who started the day 21st in League Two, were up against it when Sam Hoskins' close-range opener on just five minutes was followed by a red card for skipper Leon Legge shortly before half-time.

But David Worrall raced away to level moments later and Vale completed an unlikely victory with 15 minutes to go when Tom Pope squeezed home a penalty, sealing only their fourth win since November.

Askey said: "It was never in doubt, was it? We were poor in the first-half although, having said that, the goal they scored was two yards offside and that was in the first two or three minutes.

"It was a ridiculous decision by the linesman but we were good enough to overcome that and I couldn't be more pleased.

"You fear the worst and you're hoping you won't be beaten by four or five but the goal came at a great time and David finished it really well.

"The second-half we came out well and I don't think they caused us too many problems at all and if anything we caused them more problems.

"It was a good win and a great way to get it with Tom scoring his 100th goal for the club. It's probably played on his mind a bit because he's been injured for a few weeks but he stepped up and scored, although it seemed to take an age to hit the net!

"The gap is eight points so it increases our chances of staying up but I still think we're need at least another victory and to be honest we want to be aiming higher than that and get over 50 points.

"I think we can do that because we beat Northampton today and they had only lost one game in their last nine or 10 matches."

Music concerts at Franklin's Gardens set to have dedicated complaints line

Future gigs held at Northampton Saints' stadium will have to be accompanied by a phone line for complaints from neighbours.

The policy is set out in a proposed noise management plan commissioned by the club, which contains measures to mitigate the impact of large-scale music concerts on people living in St James.

Deni Butterfield, acoustic consultant at Surrey-based Vanguardia, said: "A telephone complaints line should be made available for the duration of the event.

"Should any noise complaints be received, a consultant will investigate it and if noise levels are above those specified in the licence conditions, immediate action would be taken to reduce level at the noise source."

The new measure will be among several in place in time for the Madness gig at Franklin's Gardens on Friday, June 28.

A permanent noise monitor will also have to be in place at the mixer desk.

The noise management plan has been written to help the club makes its case to the borough council to have a condition removed that states only rugby games can be staged at the stadium. The condition was imposed in 2000 when the demolition of the East and West stands was given the go-ahead.

The new application says this condition only came to light after the Lionel Ritchie concert in June 2018.

Saints said the application does not indicate an ambition to ramp up the number gigs at the Gardens, and pointed to the benefits it offers members of The Parish supporters club - which is exclusively for people living in nearby streets - as evidence it wants to keep on good terms with its neighbours.

A spokesman said: "This is procedural measure which does not increase the number of non-rugby events that we are already permitted to stage under the terms of our existing license and therefore we are confident there will be no further disruption to our residents, with whom we already have a good relationship.’
