UCL PREVIEW: Marks expecting tougher test from Irchester

Cogenhoe boss Andy Marks says he doesn’t expect his side to dish out another hammering to Irchester United this weekend.

But Marks still believes his men will have enough to complete the league double over the Romans.

The Cooks trounced Irchester 6-1 in the reverse fixture on November 10 and have been in good form of late, winning their past three league games.

But Marks said: “We had a comfortable win over there but I don’t think it will be as comfortable second time round.

“I expect it to be more difficult this weekend, but if we play to our strengths we should still win.

“The lads are in good form and that should stand is in good stead.”

SILEBY RANGERS

Botterill: We’re down to the bare bones

Glenn Botterill admits he’s struggling to find players for Sileby Rangers’ clash at Raunds on Saturday.

Sileby go into the clash sitting pretty at the top of the UCL Division One pile.

But Botterill has lost four men this week, with Danny Marlow and Shaun Goodall injured, Stuart Smeathers working and Mark Forbes moving to S&L Corby.

“I’m still trying to find players for this weekend,” said the boss. “We’re down to the bare bones.

“It will be a tough game at Raunds because they’re a funny side and we’re a bit threadbare.”

With some of Sileby’s rivals, including AFC Rushden & Diamonds, not in league action this weekend, Botterill’s side have a chance to extend their lead at the top.

And Botterill said: “It’s a chance to increase the gap and with the league close we need to keep the impetus.”

WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN

Adams thrilled to land Doughboys job

Craig Adams has admitted that he was ‘thrilled’ to be offered the Wellingborough Town manager’s position.

Phil Mason’s resignation earlier this week for personal reasons created a vacnacy at the Dog & Duck for the second time in just a few months and former Cobblers trainee Adams has been charged with the task of bringing about an upturn in fortunes for a side who have won just twice in the UCL Premier Division this term.

And Mason’s former assistant, who had a spell in charge at Irchester last season, can’t wait to get stuck into the task.

He said: “I’ve obviously been close to what’s been going on and it’s a shame that Phil has left but he had a few things in his private life that he needed to get sorted out, he just didn’t have the time and energy to commit to the club.

“The chairman rang me on Wednesday afternoon and offered me the job and I was thrilled to bits.

“It’s the sort of job where there would be plenty of interest and I know that was the case when Rob (Gould) left in the summer.

“But I’ve been in Wellingborough for the past 10 years and it’s an honour to have the chance to manage your home town club.”

Adams’ reign opens this weekend, the state of the Dog & Duck playing surface permitting, with the visit of Spalding and the new boss has promised that his side will never be found wanting for effort.

He added: “I’m willing to do the hard work that needs to be put in and the players will be the same.

“We’re second from bottom for a reason and the rest of the season is going to be a real test and that starts with Spalding.

“They’re spending quite a bit of money to try and get out of the league and have got some good players in but if we can be organised and committed then we can get something.

“We’ve been preparing as though we’re going to play and we know that we’re going to have to play well.”
