Cobblers defender Tozer: There’s no blame game culture at Sixfields

Ben Tozer has revealed the Cobblers squad did not play the blame game in the aftermath of the defeat to Cheltenham Town on Saturday, and says the players must focus on the fact they matched one of league two’s top teams.

Town make the long trip to Torquay United looking to correct a run of form that has seen back-to-back league defeats sandwich a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy exit to Leyton Orient.

The Gulls are two points above Northampton, who are now four outside the play-offs following a loss to Cheltenham after which - according to Tozer - there was no dressing-room finger pointing.

“We’ve got a very honest group,” he said. “Nobody points the finger, they just take the blame and don’t say it was anyone else’s fault.

“Joe Widdowson put his hand up for the second goal and said that it was his man and he was sorry.

“We’ve got people like that in the changing room who can take the blame, so there was no effing and blinding or anything like that. It was just a structured conversation.”

Torquay go into the game in inconsistent form, having won two and lost two of their past four games, with the most recent being a 1-0 loss at Bradford City on Saturday.

The Cobblers have had similarly mixed results on their long trips this season, with losses at Plymouth and Fleetwood eclipsed by the more recent 4-2 success at Accrington.

Tozer feels it is vital the team do not lose too much heart from a defeat to Cheltenham that he is not entirely convinced was deserved.

“The game has gone and we’ve got to focus on Saturday,” said Tozer. “It’s gone and we can’t do anything about it.

“We’ve got to be positive and take the positives out of it and go on again.

“I don’t think we played badly, but we threw away a two-goal lead and we were on top by far and it just turned.

“Even at 2-2 we were, by far, the better team. They had one shot in the second half and they scored it, so it is so frustrating.”
