Aidy Boothroyd says the Cobblers can look forward to an ‘exciting’ January as the Cobblers boss plots a play-off push.
Last Saturday’s setback against Cheltenham dealt a big psychological blow to those hopes, with Town blowing a two-goal lead to finish 3-2 losers at Sixfields – their third defeat on the bounce.
But the Cobblers have a perfect chance to ease the pain when they face stuttering Torquay at Plainmoor on Saturday.
And Boothroyd says it’s vital Town get back on track and show consistency in what he calls a big month for the squad, ahead of what is likely to prove a lively January transfer window.
“There’s a little bit of surgery needed I think,” said the Cobblers boss.
“I think December is a big month for us. Saturday was a big game for us and we’ve got to use that to our advantage.
“That consistency down the core of the team is really important and we haven’t had that enough.
“I can go on about injuries to our senior players and the core of our team, but at the end of it, we’ve clawed our way back into games, we’ve gone on a good run. We’ve won games we probably wouldn’t be expected to and we’ve lost games we probably wouldn’t be expected to.
“And that’s a mark of a team that’s balancing on that average to good scale.
“We’re now getting these players back and we’re looking stronger and we can do something about it in January with outs and ins. For me that is quite exciting.”
Boothroyd will be without Ishmael Demontagnac for the trip to Torquay, the midfielder is banned for one game after picking up five yellow cards. Joe Widdowson is a doubt after suffering a dead leg, while Boothroyd is still without David Artell, Luke Guttridge, John Johnson, Nana and Alex Nicholls.
