Demolition work has started on the Fishmarket building in the centre of Northampton.
The 1930s building will be knocked down over the next five to six weeks to make way for a new bus station.
The leader of Northampton Borough Council, Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm) was on the site to watch the work start on Friday morning.
He said: “This has been a very long time coming. We’ve been talking about it for years and at last we’re seeing the work start.
“The new bus station will be a great facility for the town and allow us to finally close the Greyfriars bus station next year.”
A team of 25 builders are currently working on the Fishmarket site in Sheep Street.
The new bus station is due to open at the beginning of 2014.
Work already carried out on the Fishmarket site has seen the award-winning public toilets in Sheep Street knocked down.
