The organisers of the Silverstone Classic are hoping a new race featuring cars from the 1960s will be one of the highlights of this summer’s Silverstone Classic.

For the first time, a full grid of pre-1966 GT cars such as AC Cobras, Alfa Romeo TZs, Aston Martin DB4s, Ferrari 250LMs and Jaguar E-types will compete in a special one-hour, two-driver showdown

The race is being staged at dusk on Saturday evening of the event, which takes place in the last weekend of July, and the winners will be awarded with an silver trophy, a Chopard wristwatch and a dozen bottles of Piper Heidsieck champagne.

Nick Wigley, event director, said: “We are thrilled to be teaming up with Piper Heidsieck and Chopard to create what’s going to be a fantastic race between a world class field of such spectacular GT racing cars from the Sixties.

“We believe, in fact, the grid will be substantially oversubscribed to the extent that we are setting up a special selection committee.

“All potential entrants are being asked to provide compelling photographs, information and provenance about their cars which will then be evaluated by the selection committee before a final entry list is confirmed in early June.”
