Rail replacement bus services were instead put in place.
London Midland services between Northampton and Milton Keynes are running this morning, however, train bosses say services will have to again be halted after 8pm tonight for repairs to be carried out.
Work is expected to take 10 hours, with services expected to resume on Sunday morning.
A London Midland spokesman said: “Due to the overhead wires having been brought down at Hanslope Junction, north of Milton Keynes, an amended service will run between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton after 8pm on Saturday, March 2.
“The line will be closing to enable Network Rail engineers to repair the overhead wires, which is expected to take around 10 hours.
“Some trains will terminate at Milton Keynes for road replacement transport to Northampton, some will run from Milton Keynes to Northampton via Rugby (adding around 30 minutes to the journey), and some will run direct from Milton Keynes to the West Midlands via Rugby.
“We plan to run the scheduled timetable between Northampton and London from the start of service on Sunday.”
