Police are to give social media users a glimpse of what a Saturday night is like for officers by tweeting live updates from Northampton town centre this weekend.
Northamptonshire Police have revealed they will be tweeting about the calls they receive on Saturday night, with the intention of highlighting the number of issues relating to alcohol-related disorder.
Followers of the Northamptonshire Police twitter accounts, @Northantspolice and @Op_challenge, will be updated on the evening’s activities from the perspective of an officer out on duty.
Another member of police staff will be tweeting live from the force’s control room at Wootton Hall, where 999 and 101 calls are received.
Chief Constable for Northamptonshire Police, Adrian Lee said: “I am very keen for communities to understand the scale of alcohol-related issues that require policing.
“This snapshot of activity is at peak time, but this is not just about those who socialise in our town centres.
“Many calls we receive about crime or anti-social behaviour are linked to alcohol consumption.”
He added: “I hope that this activity will provide a real insight into the demands on policing, but also to highlight to people the impact alcohol can have on their lives.”
The Twitter activity will begin at 10pm on Saturday and go on until the early hours using the hashtag #alcoholharm.
It comes after other forces have used Twitter to demonstrate police activity.
In December, police officers in the West Midlands used Twitter to describe its work over a 24-hour period.
Police said the aim was to provide a force-wide “snapshot of the lengths officers go to” keep people safe over the festive party season.
