POLICE will be targeting under-age drinkers as part of a late summer offensive.

Officers will be on the look out for youngsters under the age of 18 who are drinking on licensed premises or in the streets.

With GCSE and A Level examination results out shortly, this time of year sees a rise in under-age drinking and a spike in associated anti-social behaviour.

A police spokesman said: “Under-age drinkers who are found drinking on licensed premises will be served with a penalty notice for disorder.

“Those found drinking under-age in streets or in parks will have the alcohol confiscated and be moved on, or taken home if necessary.

“Officers will carry out enquiries as to the source of the alcohol provider and will then visit either the licensee or the parents, if they are responsible.

“A robust and low tolerance approach will be adopted and we are looking to use our police powers to combat alcohol-related crime and disorder more effectively and extensively

“And we would ask parents of under-age children, are you being a responsible parent? How are you making alcohol available to your children and do you know they are where they say they are?”

If you spot anyone drinking in public who appears to be under-age or who is behaving anti-socially, contact your Safer Community Team on 101.
