600 bales of elephant grass on fire in Northamptonshire field

Firefighters attended a field in Northamptonshire on Saturday following a blaze started the previous night.

Three crews were called out at 8.40pm on Friday to a field of elephant grass that was on fire off Welford Road, between Chapel Brampton and Spratton.

Control room staff said about 600 bales had caught light and crews from across Northampton were deployed to teh field, which is off Merry Tom Lane.

By Saturday morning it was under control and only one crew was required to keep a watching brief.

A farmer was also assisting to turn over some of the burnt grass with a JCB.

By lunchtime the last the firefighters had begun to withdraw from the scene.
