Aviation enthusiasts are being promised a stunning day of entertainment when the bi-annual Sywell Airshow returns this weekend.
Headlined by the Red Arrows, the event at Sywell Aerodrome on Sunday will also feature a First World War dogfight, the epochal Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and performances from several aerobatic teams.
There is also an extensive static display of aircraft, military vehicles, classic cars and racing cars.
All money raised goes to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance and the organisers say advanced ticket sales have far outstripped figures from the last show in 2010.
Matthew Boddington, chairman of the organising committee, is in charge of the flying side of the day.
He said: “It is going to be a stunning day. The line-up is First World War aircraft right up to the Red Arrows.
“At the airshow there are going to be 10 First World War aircraft up at a mass dogfight. The sky will be full of planes. It is one of few shows in the UK to do that, if not the only one.
“There’s the classic Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, and the B-17 Flying Fortress on the 70th anniversary of the American Air Force being deployed here.
“There will also be the Gloster Meteor, which is the oldest jet flying, and we are hoping to have a 1930s Hawker Fury, which is the only one of its kind in the world.”
Pilot Paul Ford, 50, who lives in Sywell, flies the Fokker triplane he built with Mr Boddington and owns with wife Sarah.
The plane, which takes part in the First World War dogfight, took 3,500 man hours to build over about four years.
He said: “It is a bit of a handful. It is very agile - an out-and-out fighter. It first flew in 1917, when they were really into air warfare rather than a gentleman’s sport.”
Other planes taking part in the aerial display include a Douglas Dakota, Consolidated Catalina flying boat, de Havilland Dragon and a Hawker Nimrod.
There are also spectacular aerobatic displays from the Breitling Wingwalkers, the Trig Aerobatic Team, Swip Team and the Barnstormers.
The Brooklands engineering hangar will have a display of classic Formula One cars, including Ayrton Senna’s Lotus and Jacques Villeneuve’s 1997 world championship-winning Williams-Renault.
And there will also be a huge Scalextric track and an Airfix “make and take” section where people can build their own model aircraft.
The ticket also includes entry to the Sywell Aviation Museum.
Gates open at 10am and the flying display starts at 1.45pm. For more information call Northampton 491112 and select extension four.
Tickets are now only available on the day, priced at £20 for adults and £5 for children.
