Almost 650 drivers were caught speeding across Northamptonshire, as part of a week-long county-wide operation.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said officers processed 460 speeding offences during the week, while Community Speed Watch volunteers sent out 174 warning letters to speeding motorists. In addition, PCSOs sent out a further 14 warning letters.

The week was part of a Europe-wide speed enforcement campaign to promote safer driving.

Officers and staff focused on 24 locations across the county, using the mobile speed indicator device. The highest recorded differential in speed was 78mph, snapped in a 40mph limit area.

Superintendent Andy Cox, Head of Specialist Operations, said: “Last week’s campaign reassured the public that we are taking positive steps to tackle speeding and make our roads safer. Motorists were given a very clear message that only those who drive safely and lawfully are welcome on our roads.

“Driving too fast for the road or weather conditions is the single biggest factor in fatal crashes, followed by drink driving and failure to wear seat belts.

“We regularly target all three as part of our commitment to reducing casualties and we fully support an ongoing programme of ‘anywhere, anytime’ speed enforcement.”
