Birds of a Feather actress Lesley Joseph opened a charity for the blind’s new Sight Centre in Northampton this morning.

Mrs Joseph, best known as the character Dorien Green from the BBC sitcom was shown the gadgets that Northamptonshire Association for the Blind offers to allow blind and visually impaired people to lead more independent lives.

Lesley, who is in town for the stage adaptation of the TV series at Royal & Derngate, was brought up in Kingsthorpe, and both her parents were NAB volunteers.

She said, “I am honoured to have been asked to open the new NAB premises as both my mother and father had a long association with the organisation, and in some way this repays them a little for all the work that they did for NAB.”

Over time, the charity will relocate all its head office functions and Talking Newspaper service from their current base at Wardington Court, a few hundred metres away on the Welford Road, to the new building, which used to be a Kingsthorpe Housing office.

John Wood, General Secretary for Northamptonshire Association for the Blind said: “This launch signals the start of a big move and lots of changes for the charity. “We have moved what many knew as the Resource Room into this new Sight Centre, with more aids and equipment on display and a fully accessible computer suite.”
