Northamptonshire Second XI coach Phil Rowe believes Matt Spriegel will be a good addition to club’s ranks for limited-overs cricket.

The County’s Yorkshire Bank 40 campaign opens on Sunday when Nottinghamshire visit Wantage Road with Spriegel expected to make his senior debut for the club.

The former Surrey man was signed primarily for his skills in the one-day formats and Rowe - who has been getting a close-up look at him in second-string action - is of the opinion that the County have made a good acquisition.

He said: “Without doubt he’ll be a strong addition to the squad.

“He’s got plenty of experience in the white ball game, he wants to be in the thick of things and I think we’ll see what he can do.

“He brings a calm head to the game, is terrific in the field and offers some decent off-spin as well.”

Spriegel has been in fine form for the Second XI in the early weeks of the season and his performance in the Second XI Trophy defeat of Hampshire earlier in the week - he made an unbeaten 72 in the eight-wicket win - gave evidence of what he will bring to the party.

Rowe added: “It was a very good example of how to bat in a run chase.

“He marshalled it beautifully and it takes a certain skill to bat at the end of an innings.

“He sees himself as a finisher and likes to be seen in that capacity and that is something that our one-day side needs.”
